When Constantin Brancusi died in 1957 he left his studio and its contents to the state. The studio has been faithfully reconstructed by the Centre Pompidou. His fragile works in wood and plaster, including endless columns and streamlined bird forms, show how Brancusi revolutionised sculpture.
Napoléon ordered the arch’s construction in 1809 as a monument to the Republican armies, but almost immediately the empire he’d built began to collapse. The arch, 50m high and 45m wide, was only completed in 1836. Nonetheless it bears the names of Napoléon’s victories, and is decorated with a frieze of battle scenes and sculptures on its flanks.
