The French Jewelry Revolution
From 20 September 2013 to 02 March 2014
Contemporary art as expressed by jewelry
The world of contemporary jewelry design is an exciting one. In France, jewelry designers strive to defy conventions and play with the various elements of body shapes and movement. They consider themselves to be artists putting their talents to use in order to elevate the art of finery. At the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, a Parisian museum dedicated to the decorative arts, a new exhibition pays tribute to these jewelry innovators. The exhibition is called 'In the Line of Sight: Contemporary Jewellery in France,' and it reveals 600 unique creations produced in the workshops of little known designers from across the country. In fact, the participants of this exhibition do not consider themselves to be jewelry designers. Rather, they are artists and creators who were trained in formal art schools. This training has enable them to make pieces of exceptional art that also happen to be wearable. The roughly 70 participating artists have distanced themselves from commercial jewelry making by presenting truly unique pieces commissioned on a made-to-order basis. In this way, they are paving the way for an new, iconoclastic vision of modern jewelry and fashion.
